Activities under College Farm at Village – Surgi
College farm of Pt. Shiv Kumar Shastri College of Agriculture and Research Station, Rajnandgaon was established in 2014-15 at Village – Surgi (Rajnandgaon). This farm is about 17 km away from college campus at Rajnandgaon. Fencing and digging of bore well were completed at farm during 2014-15 but crop cultivation and plantation at farm was started on 2016. The soil of farm land is Entisol and due low availability of irrigation water in bore wells, the farm is not suitable for field crops, therefore converted as dry land horticulture farm. In view of this, near about 3000 fruits plants like mango, papaya pomegranate guava etc. and some ornamentals, live fencing plants and vegetables have been planted. Pulses like mungbean, urdbean and Vegetable crops like ladies finger, cluster bean, ash guard, pumpkin etc. have been cultivating as intercropping. Looking to scarcity of water in the tube wells (two) constructed in the farm, drip irrigation system is installed in the farm for irrigation to entire plantation. Water storage was created by constructing underground tank (18000 m3 capacity) that is being filled by time to time operation of two 1.5 hp submersible pumps installed in the tube wells to a depth of 450 feet.
